The Experience

To join Hinge, you’ll need to use your Facebook account or a mobile number (you’ll receive an activation code). Then you’ll be prompted to fill out the different sections of your profile. Hinge makes it easy for you to choose what information appears in your profile.

These profile sections include:

My Vitals – This section is for basic information. The first part consists of pinpointing your location on the map (not city or zip code but the exact neighborhood!) Next you’ll be asked to enter your gender and gender preference. Also required are height, work, education, religion, children and hometown.

My Virtues – Here you’ll be asked to give your view on several controversial topics such as politics, drinking, smoking cigarettes, smoking marijuana, and other drugs.

My Profile – The last part of the process consists of uploading photos for your profile. This part is mandatory. You can choose to import photos form your Facebook account and the site will automatically grab your six latest FB pics. Finally, enter at least one writing prompt: answer questions or complete a sentence.

To view suggested matches, tap on the ‘Discover’ section and browse through the suggested profiles. Like what you see? Tap on the heart icon. You can also choose to leave a comment and give likes to photos, videos and profile sections. If you’re not interested, simply click on X and continue to the next suggestion.

After you’ve made a match, the next step is to make contact. Here you can choose the ‘Date From Home’ feature that indicates you want to have a phone conversation or live video chat. Simply change your status to ‘Ready’ and wait for your match to do the same. At that point you’ll both receive a notification informing you to schedule your call. The rest is up to you!

What we liked most about Hinge is that it really tries to match you with singles within your same social circle. It’s always easier to relate to someone when you have interests and friends in common. Each profile comes with a brief ‘About Me’ section. We found that members are generally active in the Hinge app, sending messages and likes, commenting on photos and videos, with a very low number of fake accounts.

Hinge offers a membership upgrade which they call “Preferred Member.” This upgrade is relatively low-priced compared to other dating sites, but you don’t get many additional benefits. You can become a “Preferred Member” for 1, 2 or 3 months. We suggest getting the 3-month membership for $20.97 USD (6.99 USD per month). It allows you to send unlimited likes, set advances preferences and see who likes you.
